In her art, Roberta explores the internal world. How does verbal language inform or change our perception of images? She plays with possibility to question what can be imagined or understood, what can be known and what cannot, in order to encourage introspection in the viewer.

Language has played a key role in her conceptual art since 1971. Her work has included drawings, collages, artist books, photo/text works, installations, digital prints and sculpture.

Her conceptual art, exhibited worldwide in galleries and museums, is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art  and many other public and

private collections.

Her first solo gallery exhibition took place in 1967 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Her 30 solo exhibitions include two at PS 1, MoMA; four at John Weber Gallery, NY, ; one-person gallery exhibitions in Europe and one-person museum shows at the Kunstforum, Lenbachhaus, the State Museum in Munich; and the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art, Perth, Australia.

A Tennessee Williams Fellow in Fiction and a Yaddo Fellow, Roberta is a micro and short story writer, novelist and memoirist with nine published books,

including her latest, The Princess of Herself, a story collection.

Roberta lived briefly in Amsterdam, Athens, Berlin, and Mexico. Her travels, often alone, include the Peruvian Amazon, Indonesia, Turkey, Egypt, Mali (for the NY Times Magazine) and Central America. Her travels inspired many of her stories, her novel, and her memoir about her trip alone in the Amazon. She also wrote about Mali for The Sophisticated Traveler of The New York Times.

She taught creative writing at The New School for eighteen years and she has taught at Columbia University. Since 1991, she has taught private writing workshops and continues to do so.
