Language has been the source of Roberta Allen's conceptual art (since 1970-71).
Roberta explores how language informs or changes our perception of images in drawings, collages, artist books, photo/text works, installations, digital prints and sculpture.
Her first solo gallery exhibition took place in 1967 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Her 30 solo exhibitions include two at PS 1, MoMA; four at John Weber Gallery, NY, ; solo gallery exhibitions in Europe and solo museum shows at the Kunstforum, Lenbachhaus, the State Museum in Munich; and the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art, Perth, Australia.
A Tennessee Williams Fellow in Fiction and a Yaddo Fellow, Roberta is a micro and short story writer, novelist and memoirist who has nine
published books, including her latest, The Princess of Herself, a story collection.
Roberta lived briefly in Amsterdam, Athens, Berlin, and Mexico. Her travels, often alone, include the Peruvian Amazon, Indonesia, Turkey, Egypt, Mali (for the NY Times Magazine) and Central America. Her travels inspired many of her stories, her novel, and her memoir about her trip alone in the Amazon.
She taught creative writing at The New School for eighteen years and she has taught at Columbia University. Since 1991, she has taught private writing workshops and continues to do so.
"The reemergence of an artist is a wonderful thing, but when that artist is as talented as Roberta Allen, then it is truly a joyous occasion."
