WHAT IS REAL?

Selected Collages 2015-19

Seeing and imagining evoke similar patterns in the brain but the subjective experiences they produce are very different. The brain has a system called "reality monitoring" which helps us distinguish between real and imagined information. The brain evaluates the strength (and other characteristics) of the signals to determine whether it originated in reality or imagination.

Through the interplay of text and found objects and images, I question and sometimes blur the boundaries between physical facts and facts of consciousness as I continue to explore how language informs or changes our perception of what we see.

Found objects, photos, and ink on various handmade papers. Each 8 1/4" x 6"
