WHAT IS REAL?  A Wall Installation 2011 / Selected Collages 2015-19

In these works--both the wall installation (2011) and the 20+ collages (2018-19)--I contrast physical facts with facts of consciousness. How can we compare objects which have observable forms with that which exists only in the mind? Isn’t the reality each of us accepts based on learned cultural codes as well as personal experience and interpretation? Through the interplay of text and object, I encourage the viewer’s introspection.

In 2011 (below) this wall installation was part of a group exhibition called A PLACE TO WHICH WE CAN COME  in the former  Convent of Saint Cecilia, Greenpoint, Brooklyn, curated by Serra Sabuncuoglu. This show included Robert Barry, Molissa Fenley, Marcia Hafif, Jene Highstein, Richard Nonas, James Sienna, Merrill Wagner, and Lawrence Weiner.

7 pieces were installed on the 10 foot wide hallway between the chapel and the porch. The installation consisted of 7 found objects, each with penciled text.
